Notice: Only Two Weeks Left to Collect Insured Deposit Compensation for Sberbank CZ Clients

Prague, February 24, 2025 – Only fourteen days remain until the end of the insured deposit compensation payout for clients of the failed Sberbank CZ. At the turn of February and March 2022, the bank was unable to withstand a so-called bank run, lost its liquidity, and the Czech National Bank announced that it could no longer meet its obligations. As a result, the Financial Market Guarantee System initiated the payout of insured deposit compensation through Komerční banka branches.

By law, clients of the failed bank have three years to claim their compensation. The deadline for claiming insured deposits held at Sberbank CZ will therefore expire on March 10, 2025.

How to Collect Deposit Compensation?

Clients can collect their compensation in person at Komerční banka branches by presenting the required documents. If they are unable to collect it personally, they may authorize another person through a notarized power of attorney or opt for a mail-based payout. Inheritance Proceedings and Deadline Extensions

If the deposit compensation is part of an inheritance proceeding, notaries or heirs must contact the Financial Market Guarantee System directly. In cases where the rightful recipient has not yet been determined, the payout deadline is suspended, meaning it will extend beyond March 10, 2025.

The Largest Payout in Czech Deposit Insurance History

The compensation payout for Sberbank CZ clients is the largest in the history of the Czech deposit insurance system in terms of total disbursed funds. Nearly CZK 26 billion has been paid out to clients. Thanks to a record-breaking insolvency process, the Financial Market Guarantee System has already recovered 95% of its claim related to the deposit compensation payout.
